The Tappan Zee Dance Group (TZDG) was formed in 1987 with the original purpose
of providing working space and administrative support for a co-operative group of
professional dancer/choreographer/instructors. For 19 years, the TZDG (incorporated in
1989 as a non-profit arts organization; and an affiliate organization of the Westchester
Arts Council) has defined its mission: to serve the art form of dance by supporting its
practitioners; by providing cultural enrichment to our community through dance; and by
training professional dancers.
The TZDG teaching faculty consists of instructors chosen for the strength of their
professional background, credentials in performance and choreography and dance pedagogy.
Students from Westchester County and the surrounding areas aged three through adult are
enrolled yearly in a range of classes that include pre-ballet/creative movement, ballet,
jazz dance, modern dance and rhythm tap.
All students at TZDG have many
opportunities to perform, including the Spring Student Dance Performance, the Open
Houses held at the studio and various appearances at local dance events and festivals.
The Repertory Company is TZDG's teen performing group that is geared towards the
professionally oriented dancer.
TZDG's Community Outreach programs provide extensive scholarship help for the study
of dance (in the academic year 2005-06 we provided $16,000 in scholarships),
school artist-in-residencies (including residencies at Hackley K through 4th,
Tarrytown - 1st, and Transfiguration After school program), community-based teaching,
Open House performances,
after school programs, consultations for developing on-site dance programs, a teacher
bank, and such special projects as the Oral History Pilot Project, through which elders
in our community record their histories to be interpreted by choreographers and artists
working in other art forms.
TZDG supports the professional dance community by providing such services as rehearsal
and work facilities for professional choreographers; professional enrichment and
development opportunities for working dancers; and production services for professional
dancers who wish to showcase their work, which draws highly acclaimed, cutting edge,
contemporary dance companies from New York City and the surrounding area.
Our work is and has been funded by the Westchester Arts Council, the New York Foundation
for the Arts, the Village of Tarrytown, the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, the
Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, Hitachi America/The Hitachi
Foundation, the Capelli Foundation, the Mark Brent Dolinsky Foundation, the Westchester
Community Foundation, and a broad base of individual gifts.
